What’s the Difference Between Kilimanjaro and Mount Toubkal?
Both Kilimanjaro and Mount Toubkal offer incredible trekking experiences, stunning views, and serious bragging rights — but they’re very different adventures. Whether you’re trying to decide which one to take on first or just curious how they compare, here’s everything you need to know.
1. The Basics
Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa at 5,895m and sits in Tanzania. It’s usually climbed over 6–9 days via a multi-day expedition with tents or mountain huts.
Mount Toubkal, on the other hand, is the highest peak in North Africa at 4,167m and sits in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains. Most people summit in just 2–4 days, staying in simple mountain refuges or local guesthouses.
Neither trek requires technical climbing skills — though crampons may be needed for Toubkal in winter.
2. Which One Is Harder?
Kilimanjaro is tougher for most people. The combination of high altitude, longer trekking days, basic camping, and the slow, steady ascent makes it a real physical and mental challenge.
Toubkal is a shorter, steeper climb — and while it’s still physically demanding, you won’t be exposed to such extreme altitude. That said, the pace is faster, with less time to acclimatise, especially on the 2-day itinerary.
If you’ve never experienced altitude before, Toubkal is a fantastic introduction.
3. The Cultural Experience
Tanzania and Morocco both deliver on culture — but in very different ways.
Kilimanjaro gives you a chance to explore East African landscapes, Maasai culture, and world-class safari options before or after your trek. It feels like a full-blown expedition from start to finish.
Toubkal, meanwhile, offers the buzz of Marrakech, the tranquillity of remote Berber villages, and the warm hospitality of Moroccan mountain life — all within just a few hours of flying from the UK.
4. How Much Do They Cost?
Kilimanjaro is definitely a bigger financial and logistical commitment. You’ll need at least £2,000–£3,500 to cover the trek, guides, flights, permits, porters, and gear.
Toubkal is far more budget-friendly. You can do a 4-day guided trip for under £1,000 including flights, making it one of the most accessible high-altitude treks in the world.
5. So… Which One Should You Choose?
Choose Kilimanjaro if you want:
• A true expedition feel
• The challenge of nearly 6,000m altitude
• A longer, immersive adventure
Choose Toubkal if you want:
• A shorter, more affordable trekking experience
• A cultural hit with warm local hospitality
• To test yourself at altitude without going full expedition mode
Kilimanjaro and Toubkal are both iconic — but they suit different types of travellers. If you’re new to high-altitude trekking or tight on time and budget, Toubkal is a brilliant choice. If you’re ready for something bigger and want the full “Roof of Africa” experience, Kilimanjaro won’t disappoint.
