Do I Need a Visa for Nepal? A Simple Guide for Adventure Travellers
Planning a trek to Everest Base Camp or another Himalayan adventure in Nepal? Then you’ll need to sort your visa before you hit the trail.
The good news is that getting a Nepal visa is simple, and this guide has everything you need to know—whether you’re flying into Kathmandu or preparing in advance from the UK.
Do UK Citizens Need a Visa for Nepal?
Yes—UK travellers (and most international visitors) need a visa to enter Nepal. But it’s very straightforward, and you’ve got three main options:
Option 1: Visa on Arrival (Most Popular)
You can get your visa on arrival at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport.
What you’ll need:
A valid passport (at least 6 months remaining)
One passport photo
Visa fee in cash (USD is easiest)
Costs:
15 days: USD $30
30 days: USD $50
90 days: USD $125
There are kiosks at the airport to complete the form digitally, or you can speed things up by filling it out online beforehand.
Option 2: Apply Online (Recommended for Fast Entry)
Nepal offers an online visa application (great if you want to breeze through the airport queue).
Apply here: Nepal Online Visa Portal
You’ll still pay on arrival—but you’ll already have your confirmation printed and ready.
Option 3: Apply at the Embassy (Less Common)
You can also apply in person at the Nepalese Embassy in London—though most trekkers just use the airport option.
Top Tips for Trekkers
Bring USD in cash. It’s the smoothest way to pay at the airport.
Keep your visa receipt safe. You’ll need it when leaving the country.
Book a visa that covers your whole trip. Most EBC treks are around 12–16 days, so we recommend the 30-day visa.
This is separate from your trekking permits. Those are handled by us once your trip is booked.
Transit Tip
If you’re transiting through India, Qatar, or another hub, check if you need a transit visa for your stopover country.
Final Word
Visas don’t need to be a headache. If you’re booked on one of our treks to Everest Base Camp or anywhere else in Nepal, we’ll make sure you’ve got clear instructions before you fly.
